Amritians helps in Free Chikunguniya-Fever Camp at Calicut

Recently Southern districts especially Calicut district has been critically affected by Chikunguniya and other types of viral fevers. It has been reported that Lacks of people are affected by such fevers. People were seen reporting high fever and headache along with severe joint pain. Many parts of body have swollen and become red. In the face of this situation, a fully equipped medical team from AIMS, Amrita Calicut Ashram, and Amritians Healthcare Team jointly conducted medical camp at Calicut on 8th & 9th August, and September 6th 2009) krishnadas.jpg"The need for medical facilities in the Ulliyeri village of Calicut was clearly demonstrated by the turnout in the medical camp conducted by Amrita. Ulliyeri, one of the worst affected villages in South India with respect to Chikunguniya and other medical problems was blessed with the medical camp organized by the team. It was a practical example of utilizing management skills for noble cause. The medical team from AIMS, Amrita Kozhikode Ashram, alums in Amritians team and the local people collectively showcased an excellent case of working for the noble cause. Close to one thousand people were given free medicines and consulting. They were also provided with facilities for taking up tests like Sugar, ECG, X-Ray etc with the help of Amrita Mobile Telemedicine Unit. One could clearly see the blend of technology, management, devotion and spirituality to serve the mankind. The medicines were in abundance and there was no shortage in the entire time span of the camp. The doctors were available till afternoon and the entire camp lasted for more than six hours. At the end of the day, one could take away great experience and the joy within of being a part of such a great initiative. These camps should be a motivation for students, professionals and alums of Amrita to take up such initiatives to serve the needy." Says Krishnadas, pursuing P.hd at IIM-Kozhikode. Sanju Krishnan, alumni from Amritapuri contacted his company and able to raise a good amount to support the fever affected people. The camp was held at Chikunguniya affected areas of Calicut districts namely Olavanna and Ulliyeri. On 8th the camp was held at Olavanna Village Panchayat Auditorium and on 9th it was at Ulliyeri A.U.P School. During the 2 day session around 2300 patients got benefited by the camp. Along with free medicines patients were given other medical facilities like Lab, E.C.G and X-Ray free of cost. The camp was also an example of communal unity needed to be shown at the time of such catastrophe were we could see people from various background (Local people from both the areas irrespective of caste and religion, Volunteers of MAM, Amritians Healthcare and Amritians Calicut Chapter Members coming together with selfless motive.
